Globally, tonnes of pallet wrap is used per year, so one of the main questions you should be asking when purchasing wrap for your business is – how can I reduce wastage and my cost per pallet at the same time? Ask the right questions – because the last thing you should be asking is how much per roll. Here’s why.
The type of films being used and the stretch wrap tension are the two biggest factors to consider to ensure you have the right wrap for the job.
Many customers measure the value of pallet wrap against the cost per roll, cost per metre or a cost per kilogram. Really, what they should be asking is what is the best wrap for their needs ensuring they get the maximum benefit, at the best price, to do the best job.
Most of the time the cheaper rolls have less metres per roll. You’ll pay less for the roll – but you’ll certainly use a lot more rolls to get the same job done.
Pallet wrap is measured not only in metres, but also in microns – and the micron (thickness) is crucial to your application. For over-sized, heavy or irregular shaped pallets a thicker film will protect the load from puncturing or movement during transportation. If you’re only looking at a per metre cost without considering the micron and stretch percentage then you may have to use more wrap to secure your goods.
So, if you’re not using the right wrap and the right amount of tension then this inefficiency can cost a business thousands of dollars per year.Knowing whatprice you’re paying per roll doesn’t tell you what the total cost is to wrap each pallet. Buying wrap at a low cost per roll doesn’t mean it is more economical; you need to understand the length and yield of stretch film rather than the raw roll cost.
Questions you should be asking when buying pallet wrap:
- Is the best wrap required cast or blown?
- Machine or hand wrap application?
- How big / heavy is the load size?
- Do the loads vary in size or shape?
- How far do the goods have to travel?
- How long will the goods be stored for?
- Is food or medicine being wrapped? If so, what additional security does the wrap have to provide?
- Will food products need ventilation?
- Outside (UVI required) or inside storage?
- Film Clarity for scanning?
The majority of consumers are unaware of how much money they are wasting by using the wrong pallet wrap which leads to an inefficient pallet wrapping method. A thicker film does not mean it is the best one for the job but may in fact cost your business more per pallet.
