As an organisation, Bunzl is always looking for ways to create a sustainable future for us and all those who follow. By collaborating with leading companies across sectors to find more sustainable solutions and source better alternatives where possible, the Sustainability Ambassador Program ensures that sustainability goals are being prioritised at all our branches.

We spoke with one of Bunzl Australia’s Sustainability Ambassadors, Angela Patten, an Account Manager from our Queensland branch on why she joined the program and the importance of sustainability to her and her customers.

Why did you volunteer to become a Sustainability Ambassador?

I was nominated by my Regional Manager and since I’ve joined the team – I couldn’t be prouder. It’s great to know that we have an excellent bunch of people that truly want the best for the environment.

Do you have any personal goals when it comes to sustainability in your industry?

A personal goal of mine is to educate our clients about the best sustainability products and upcoming legislation that may affect them. I want to educate them on the importance of being sustainable and that natural resources won’t last forever. My message is sustainability starts with one person… then a team… then a company…. Then the world!

What are you most excited to work with your customers on?

I’m excited to show our customers that there are numerous ways to help their company and show their clients that they are doing their best in this area – acting as an extension of their business. Letting our customers shine towards their clients, whilst being in the background and giving them sound advice on the best action to take for their scope of works.

I look forward to showing them how much waste we’re saving from landfill and showing Mother Earth that we genuinely care about her. When helping customers, I’m always thinking long term for future generations. I try to always bring sustainability up in general conversation with them, asking our customers if they have a target? And if so, what is their sustainability target?

I drop this seed to get them thinking. The more I talk about sustainability and sustainable practices, the more questions they have. Increasing the conversations we’re having around leads to more action.

Is there anything that you’d like to see more of when it comes to sustainability?

I want to be able to offer products that are reliable and won’t slow my client’s business down. For example, there’s no point giving my hospitality clients takeaway containers that simply don’t work.

I’d like to see people be a solution seller and not just an order taker. I want to see people creating awareness and explaining why the reasons behind it are creating a solution.

What changes do you find most exciting surrounding sustainability in your space?

Pretty much all of the above – awareness, achievement, ongoing change – all of this leads to a better path for future generations.
